The stone-carved elephant symbolizes good fortune and auspiciousness. The phrase “吉祥如意” (good fortune and as you wish) can be interpreted as “吉象如意” (auspicious elephant as you wish), conveying the meaning of having one’s wishes come true. The elephant is a sacred symbol of the nation and is also considered the steed of Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, signifying her constant presence. Therefore, it also holds the meanings of warding off disasters, protecting oneself, and blessing others. The pronunciation of “象” (elephant) is similar to “祥” (auspicious), and in traditional customs, the elephant represents good fortune.
“招财进宝” (zhāo cái jìn bǎo) is a Chinese idiom that means “to attract wealth and bring in treasures.” This phrase is often used to wish others an increase in wealth, prosperity in business, and a steady flow of income. It commonly appears in decorations, couplets, and well-wishes during festive occasions like the Lunar New Year, expressing the hope for a prosperous and affluent life.
